(E) "Wisdom is knowing what to do next, skill is knowing how to do it, virtue is doing it" // (F) "La sagesse c'est savoir les attendus de son prochain acte, le talent c'est savoir comment le faire et la vertu c'est l'action consistant à le faire". David Starr Jordan (1851-1931), leading eugenicist, educator, and peace activist, Jordan was also a former Stanford University President. I'm not quite sure to be all right with him for just knowing what to do next doesn't specify whether what one intends to do is good or not. One can intend to murder, to rape, to steal, to insult, etc. Not sure to be wise conduct.

(E) To understand reality is not the same as to know about outward events. It is to perceive the essential nature of things. The best-informed man is not necessarily the wisest. Indeed there is a danger that precisely in the multiplicity of his knowledge he will lose sight of what is essential. But on the other hand, knowledge of an apparently trivial detail quite often makes it possible to see into the depth of things. And so the wise man will seek to acquire the best possible knowledge about events, but always without becoming dependent upon this knowledge. To recognize the significant in the factual is wisdom. // (F) Comprendre la realité n'est pas synonyme de connaitre les faits tels qu'ils se presentent à l'esprit. C'est plutôt saisir la dimension fondamentale des choses. La personne la plus intelligente n'est pas nécessairement la plus sage. Il y a, en effect, danger que dans sa profusion de connaissances, elle ne perde de vue ce qui est essentiel. Mais dans une autre mesure, la connaissance d'un détail d'apparence anodine peut assez souvent permettre d'entrevoir la portée intrinsèque des choses. Ainsi, le sage devrait-il chercher à acquérir la meilleure connaissance qui soit à propos des faits, mais toujours sans jamais être prisonnier de son savoir.
